Here at Hillcrest we only have a thirty-five minute long lunch break. There are various reasons on why students think that lunch breaks should be elongated. One reason that came to my mind was that students run late because they don’t have enough time to eat their lunch. I wanted more opinions on this topic, so I decided to interview three students to learn more about whether or not the lunch break should be longer, shorter or if it should stay the same. The two students that I got a chance to talk to were Kevin Pinson and Blaz Pardo.
Some students do think that the amount of time for lunch break is fine, but they could also have a reason for why it should change. “I personally think that lunch break is enough time for eating, but a lot of students want to also use their lunch time for make-up work or tests, which starts to make a problematic situation for those who want to eat but at the same time they also have to do work.” Kevin Pinson said. It seems like some students may want more time for make-up work or tests because intervention mondays don’t give enough time for them to do their work.
Some students want the lunch break extended for food reasons. Blaz Pardo said “I think lunch break is too short and it should be extended because whenever I go to get food I am always late to my 5th hour. For example, I went to Marco’s Pizza and we had to wait in line for the pizza which made me super late for Mr. Webb’s class.” I believe this quote proves my theory about how students want the break to be elongated to have more time to eat their food.
Overall, it seems like students mainly want the lunch time extended. Though, both students I interviewed had their own reasons for why it should be. I believe that both opinions do make sense though, because if there were more time it could benefit both students who need to catch up on work and for students who don’t have enough time to eat because lunch lines may be too long. In the end, it seems like a longer lunch time would be beneficial towards most students.
