James Gunn: Marvel or DC?

Levi Ross, Staff Writer

Is James Gunn with Marvel or DC? James Gunn is the first and only filmmaker to have directing credits on films in both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Extended Universe. Marvel and DC are huge rivals, so this was a big problem! Gunn hasn’t made any decisions, but he seems to be interested in sticking with DC Films, as they are prioritizing a filmmaker’s vision over the interconnected storytelling that is Marvel’s bread and butter. In 2018, James was fired from Marvel Studios which became a blessing in disguise for his future career in DC studios. Gunn made the transition to DC and helped develop Suicide Squad. Afterwards, Disney rehired him to help develop Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Discovery then enlisted Gunn and producer Peter Safran to be the new co-heads of the DC Extended Universe. Handling the creative side of DC, James Gunn will be and is the DCEU’s Kevin Feige and will foresee the future of DC’s entertainment franchise during his exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Gunn now has an opportunity to bring a level of success to the DCEU that their competitor, Marvel Studios, has already achieved. Presently, James Gunn is able to develop newer projects that continue to introduce brand-new and obscure characters, while also focusing on telling more interconnected stories in the long run. DC now has a major opportunity to spend more time developing their projects long-term like Marvel Studios does.
