Motorcycle is probably one of the most dreaded words to hear as a parent. Whenever it’s brought up it’s always followed up by ‘this and this happened.’ Whether it be an uncle or some kind of distant relative, there is always something negative said about them. But are they actually as dangerous as parents and people say?
No doubt motorcycles are more dangerous than driving in a car as the fatality rate of a motorcycle is 30 times higher according to J.D Power. However what many people fail to account for in these deaths is how many of them actually wore a helmet. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in an article about motorcycle safety, the most common cause of deaths is head trauma. Wearing a helmet can decrease your chance of death by 37% up to 42% and people not wearing helmets are 3x more likely to experience head injury. Due to country laws helmets usually aren’t required over the age of 21. Gear is almost crucial yet only 17 states require it. And so, are they really as dangerous?
Unfortunately bikes will always be more dangerous when being compared to driving in a car. However, wearing gear can be the big difference between life and death. But when motorcycles are being talked about, it is pretty over exaggerated on how dangerous they are, as many other things are just as dangerous but talked about less. Finally, it’s most important to ride safe.
